Sundays in 2009 will see a further increase in the number of friendly matches played over last year. There will be 2 friendly sides playing almost every Sunday throughout the season, with a few exceptions.

Friendlies are a great opportunity for those who have been away from the game for some time to get back involved and for youngsters to get a taste of senior cricket.

We also play a number of prestige games against our select Presidents XI and the Mayor of Fareham's XI.  We also host the occasional touring side midweek.

Sunday cricket is in decline and we are one of the few clubs in the area who still play regularly on a Sunday. Help keep this important part of the cricket world alive and join in.

Sunday Captain's Report 2009

Another successful year for the club all round and this was supported by the fact that every Sunday throughout the summer, Sarisbury fielded two sides and on some occasions even three.

With no regular captains available, the leadership was taken on by a number of young players and particular thanks must go to Tom Clark and Chris Oliphant for their help in the organising and running of the sides. It is important to remember that Sunday cricket plays a pivotal role in developing young players into adult cricket and the need for volunteers to run these sides is paramount.

A number of youngsters of whom I’m sure will all feature in league cricket (if not already) next season have graced Sunday cricket this season. These include; Rob Carpenter, Ollie Challis, Lewis Mitchard, Sam Floyd, Rob Clinch, Billy Taylor, Toby Mitcheson, Ed Ruff, Tom Farley, Ben Robinson, Fraser Moon, Cam Pye and Mike Cooper.  All have shown real desire and aptitude which should serve them well in future years.

On the batting front, Tom Clark led the way, hitting 2 hundreds and 4 fifties on his way to tally of 682 runs. Joe Humby also cracked 2 centuries in the only 2 games he played. Keith Hammond showed the way with the ball picking up 22 scalps just edging out Ben Robinson (17) and Billy Taylor (15) who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

As always, the prestigious game which saw the Chairman’s XI take on the Presidents XI was staged at the hollow with the Presidents XI coming out victorious after a few years of heartache. Keith Hammond picked up 3-32 much to the disliking of the Chairman’s side.

There were also a number of touring games and intra-club games that took place over the summer and my thanks goes to Andy Oliphant for his help with those fixtures. I’m sure ‘The Hollow’ is one of the few places where on a Tuesday afternoon in Mid-August you will find 22 players from one club playing an intra-club, 35 over friendly with players from right across the board.

Looking forward to 2010 where hopefully even more games will grace the Hollow turf!!!

Finally thank you to all those who played, officiated, made teas and worked on the ground to make yet another successful season possible.

Matt Journeaux
